Like many fans, the superstar country duo just can’t get enough of Wallen’s sophomore effort, Dangerous: The Double Album, which has been on repeat for many since its release. Dan + Shay even shared that “songs like this” are one of the reasons why they “fell in love with country music.”

Dan + Shay let their inner fan free in covering a song on Morgan Wallen’s new album. The country duo put their voice to the chorus of “Sand in My Boots,” a standout song from Dangerous: The Double Album.

“Sand in My Boots” is the first track on Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, which topped the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums in the week ending Jan. 23, and it hit No. 8 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Wallen chatted with his frequent collaborators HARDY, who co-wrote “Sand in My Boots,” and Charlie Handsome on Apple Music Country’s Happy Hour Radio on Friday (Jan. 22) about how the song came to be and how both Wallen and Bryan “fell in love” with it.

Morgan Wallen’s heartbreak song, “Sand In My Boots,” is made for those who are trying to get over a former love interest, specifically one you’ve met over summer or on a beach vacation. String and Spurs reported that “[t]hroughout the track, Wallen reminisces on an encounter with a former flame which began on the beach as love and hopes of forever but abruptly ended, leaving Wallen with nothing more than some sand in his boots.” That theme seemingly hit one fan hard who tweeted, “4th time listening to Sand In My Boots, cried again. I’ve cried every time.”

Still riding high off the release of his second album, Dangerous: The Double Album, Wallen pulled in 183 million song streams for the week. Dangerous also remained at Number One on the Top 200 Albums chart, moving 154,700 album-equivalent units thanks primarily to 160.4 million. And capping it all off, two album tracks remained in the Top 10 of the Top 100 Songs chart: “Wasted at You,” which landed at Number Four with 12.7 million streams, and “Somebody’s Problem,” which came in at Eight with 11.3 million streams.

Sand In My Boots – Morgan Wallen

[Verse 1]
She asked me where I was from
I said “Somewhere you never been to”
Little town outside of Knoxville
Hidden by some dogwood trees
She tried talkin’ with my accent
We held hands and waded into
That blue water
She left her flip-flops by my Red Wings on the beach

[Chorus]
Yeah but, now I’m dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado
Like a heart-broke Desperado, headin’ right back to my roots
Somethin’ ’bout the way she kissed me tells me she’d love Eastern Tennessee
Yeah, but all I brought back with me was some sand in my boots

[Verse 2]
I said “Let’s go shoot tequila”
So we walked back to that beach bar
She said “Don’t cowboys drink whiskey?”
So we drank bottom shelf
She said “Damn, that sky looks perfect”
I said “Girl, you’ve never seen stars like the ones back home”
And she said “Maybe I should, see ’em for myself”

[Chorus]
Yeah, but now I’m dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado
Like a heart-broke Desperado, headin’ right back to my roots
Somethin’ ’bout the way she kissed me tells me she’d love Eastern Tennessee
Yeah, but all I brought back with me was some sand in my boots

[Bridge]
I said meet me in the mornin’
And she told me I was crazy
Yeah, but I still thought that maybe she’d show up

[Chorus]
Oh, but now I’m dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado
Like a heart-broke Desperado, headin’ right back to my roots
Somethin’ ’bout the way she kissed me tells me she’d love Eastern Tennessee
Yeah, but all I brought back with me was some sand in my boots
Yeah, but all I brought back with me was some sand in my boots
